Fantastic early snow has Utah Ski resorts opening early. Brighton led the way by opening on Oct. 29 — its earliest start in 21 years. Snowbird followed on Nov. 5 — it's earliest opening ever.

One hundred plus inches of snow fell on Utah mountains in October, and more is falling this week, guaranteeing great early season skiing. If prognosticators are correct, this will be one of our best-ever snow years.

Here is a list of resort opening dates:

Come early this year, if you can. The snow is already great and the slopes won't be crowded during the early part of the season. The influx of skiers will hit just before Christmas and last through President's Day.

Expect crowds at ski resorts during the holidays, but that is part of the charm of the season. The resorts go all out for the holidays and the atmosphere is very festive.

Snowmobilers are also excited about all this early snow. Utah Parks and Recreation will begin grooming hundreds of miles of high country trails during the first week of December. Some of our more popular snowmobile play areas include Cedar Mountain on the south, Fish Lake and Skyline Drive in the center of the state, and Strawberry and Mirror Lake in the north.

Hiking, biking and Jeeping conditions are now perfect in the desert canyons of southern Utah. Daytime temperatures are ideal for canyon hikes that don't require wading. This is a great time to explore national parks including Zion, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Remember, the golf courses around St. George are green and inviting. This is prime time to hit the desert links.

Utah Winter Games

These free clinics provide the opportunity to learn about and participate in many different winter sports. These clinics offer professional instruction at world-class venues and often provide free rental equipment. Yes, they're free and there's no catch! This is the 13th season for the annual event, which is intended to encourage and support athleticism in the hopes that participants will incorporate winter sports into a healthy and positive lifestyle.

Clinics fill up fast so early registration is recommended. Clinics begin in late November and continue into January. For more info: www.utahwintergames.org, uwg@xmission.com or call (801) 975-4515.
